AMUR TIGERS

The Amur tiger used to be known in the West as the Siberian tiger but it is now known by the name that Russians use, the Amur tiger.

Russia is the last refuge of this amazing cat, the largest on the planet.

The snowy forests of the Russian Far East are home to the remaining 450 adult Amur tigers while a few live across the border in China. But China is the greatest threat to these magnificent creatures as their body parts are used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and so they are poached and sold on the black market for this unscrupulous trade.

AMUR works on all fronts to ensure the continued existence of the Amur tigers and their lesser know cousin the Amur leopard, the rarest big cat, with only 35 remaining in the wild.

The work to protect the tigers and leopards includes veterinary support, anti-poaching teams, working with the Chinese community to educate them against using tiger products and also protecting their forest home from fires and logging.
